Director Navin Batra’s film Super Model is a showpiece of Veena Malik’s
curves.
The underlying idea behind the whole claptrap is to show Veena
Malik and a couple of other female models in a range of colourful
bikinis. Building on and around that idea, writer Sangeeta Ahlawat
throws in a murder angle and turns the sleaze fest into a suspense
drama. But it all looks so dated -- like the cinema of the previous
century -- that one can’t but laugh and cringe at the banality of Super Model.
Harsh Chhaya (is he alright?) plays a wine baron looking out for five hot female models to launch his new brand. He hires an ace fashion photographer (Ashmit Patel) to hunt out the contestants and do the photoshoots in the picturesque Fiji.
So the shutterbug and a bevy of semi-clad hotties house themselves at a Fijian resort for 10 days. Veena Malik plays the most ambitious of the contestants and she also catches the fancy of the photographer. Soon catfights break out between the models and things turn ugly with mysterious murders. Who’s the killer?
Even a lame story can be turned into a watchable movie in good hands. But director Navin Batra’s execution is not just amateurish, but void of any imagination. The murders look more comical than chilling. Before that the catfights are purely kindergarten stuff.
The actors, helmed by Veena Malik and Ashmit Patel, seem to be in a competition to see who hams more. While Veena wins hands down, Ashmit is a close second.
Nothing in Super Model works. The story is threadbare, performances are aweful and direction too tacky. Yes, there’s ample skinshow, but will that titillate you is another question altogether.
