Both Lewis Hamilton and McLaren are made for each other and that is what the ace driver
delivered yesterday after qualifying on pole position in a stunning fashion by posting the fastest time in all three segments of the hour-long session at Hungarian Grand Prix.
This is Hamilton’s 22nd career pole and his first since the second grand prix of the season in Malaysia. It was the 150th pole in McLaren’s history. He proved McLaren chief executive Ron Dennis totally wrong when he claimed it is the team who employ the driver and not the other way around.
If Hamilton is to ram home that message before F1 shuts down until the back end of next month, then victory today would be the ideal way to do so. The portents are promising given that Hamilton has had two victories here, while a McLaren has won here four times in the previous five years.
After the session Hamilton said: “The pressure I’m under to deliver that perfect lap is intense and exciting. It was just a case of going out there and doing it.”
