Looks like Ang Lee has a reason to celebrate as his latest film gets off to a
flying start in the country. The Irrfan and Tabu starrer Life of Pi has managed to surprise the trade with its good collection and the film has managed to collect Rs 13.65 crore net in its first weekend.
In the meanwhile, the Diwali release Jab Tak Hai Jaan has already crossed
the Rs 100 crore mark and Son of Sardar is fast inching towards it. JTHJ stands at around Rs 109.41 crore and SOS has raked in around R 95.05 crore after its second weekend.
Girish Wankhede, the official spokesperson of a multiplex chain points out, “Life of Pi opened very well and the occupancy has been around 85 per cent in our chain all over the country. Looks like that due to the good technical aspect, the audience has appreciated the film. It also had good content, good promotions and overall it looked like an interesting package. On the other hand, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 is faring average while the Diwali releases has also managed to hold their own strongly.”
Amod Mehra, trade analyst says, “Life of Pi was okay all over India and this week can be best described as a quiet week. Lee’s film has done good business and has been liked by the audience and the critics alike. SOS and JTHJ have both been steady and had a decent weekend as well.”
Trade expert Atul Mohan says, “I think the business of Life of Pi is commendable considering it is a non-franchisee film. It had created a buzz since a long time and the aggressive marketing helped its cause. The Diwali releases have both been decent and has made huge money for everyone.”
