A
worst day for Pakistani Military when an IDE went off while an army
convoy was passing by in northwest Pakistan, killing 14 soldiers and
wounding 25 others Sunday, officials said. The explosion occurred on a road about 50 km (30 miles) south of the provincial capital of Miranshah. Twenty-five soldiers were wounded in the attack, senior army officials said.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in North Waziristan, one of seven districts in Pakistan's volatile tribal region bordering Afghanistan. A spokesman for the Mujahideen Ansar, a group dominated by Uzbek fighters, claimed responsibility and told Reuters the attack was retaliation for the Pakistani army's complicity in drone strikes. The group is allied to Pakistan Taliban fighters.
Security analysts have described the region as a heaven for various factions of Afghan and Pakistani Taliban and al Qaeda militants, and it has been targeted frequently by suspected U.S. drones for years.
Militant groups have retaliated by attacking government forces.
